Heads Up Display. Not all games have a HUD, but those that do often provide the gamer with stats that are vital to gameplay. Information such as health levels, ammo count, and shield remaining are all examples of the type of information that could be displayed in a HUD. Some game designers prefer to opt out of including a HUD in their game so that screen real estate is saved and greater player immersion can be achieved. Many FPS games employ HUDs.
